4 Tips to Help your Child Maintain a Love of Learning

Written by Greater Atlanta Christian School | Sat, May 16, 2020
For a parent, there is no greater pleasure than watching your child learn new things. While a school's purpose is to ensure children receive the education they need to be successful in life, parents play a role in preparing children outside the classroom as well. The best teachers inspire students to nurture their curiosity by creating an environment where learning is fun. Parents can do the same at home to instill a love of learning in their child that will last a lifetime.
Below are four tips to keep in mind to help your child develop a love of learning.

1. Nurture your child's interests and talents through the arts and extracurricular activities.

You've probably heard a lot about the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) subjects. STEM subjects are important but don't forget about the arts and extracurriculars. Figure out ways to support your child's interests and talents. Through the arts, children can express themselves and be creative. Artistic endeavors like dance, painting, and theater can be life-changing experiences for children that they can turn into a career if they desire. Parents should seek out opportunities to expose their children to many art forms to broaden their skills and knowledge. Other extracurriculars like athletics are beneficial to a child developing a love of learning too. Children gain lifelong skills through athletics like teamwork, self-discipline, perseverance, and more. Think outside the box when it comes to supporting your child's interests too. For example, an interest in video games can suggest an interest in computer programming and an interest in comic books may suggest an interest in writing. Be on the lookout for an area that could lend itself to deeper learning.

2. Take your child on trips where he or she can experience learning.

Visiting museums and zoos are always great things for parents to do because they are real-life learning labs. The sensory experience children get at these sites makes learning more memorable.  Plan family trips that include an educational component. This can be as simple as doing activities on the beach during your family vacation like building volcanoes or matchbox boats to learn how waves work.

3. Encourage reading, always.

Sometimes children have to read books for school that they may not be as interested in reading. Give your child the opportunity to read books they enjoy and pick on their own as well. Make an effort to visit the library regularly outside of school and get recommendations of popular, age-appropriate books your child can enjoy. Help your child set a goal to read a certain number of pages each week and track their progress. You could even reward reading. Since there are many movies made from books, you could make a deal with your child that if they read the book, you'll take them to see the film.

4. Use technology to stimulate learning.

Lastly, iPhones and iPads have a wealth of education apps that make learning an interactive experience for children. Regularly scan the App store and read reviews on learning tools like language apps, math apps, and puzzle games. Your child will enjoy using multiple learning skills at once while exploring new subjects.

Education is one of the most important things to focus on when raising a child. By following these tips, you'll already be on your way to ensuring your child looks forward to learning.
