Over 50 Great Books for Summer Reading

Posted by Jamie Dalton

The beach, the pool, fun with friends. Summertime gives kids (and teachers and parents) the opportunity to slow down their life and enjoy friends, family, and a slower pace.  But, during the summer months, it’s very important to keep that mind sharp!  One of the best and most enjoyable ways to learn is to READ, READ, READ!

According to University of Florida professors Anne McGill-Franzen and Richard Allington “When children are provided with 10 to 20 self-selected children’s books at the end of the regular school year, as many as 50 percent not only maintain their skills, but actually make reading gains" (Bridging the Summer Reading Gap).

Some kids (and adults) are intimidated by reading, but anyone can do it!  A short poem entitled “I Read” by Richard Peck sums it up best:

“I read because one
life isn’t enough, and
in the page of a book
I can be anybody;

I read because the

words that build
the story become mind,
to build my life;

I read not for happy
endings but for new
beginnings; I’m just
beginning myself, and
I would mind a map;

I read because I have
friends who don’t, and
young though they are,
they’re beginning to
run out of material;

I read because every
journey begins at
the library, and it’s
time for me to start
packing;

I read because one
of these days I’m going
to get out of this
town, and I’m going to
go everywhere and meet
everybody, and I want
to be ready.”
